Kitchen Hack: How to cut pits away from peaches, nectarines, and plums

By Julie Lepore, Macaroni Kid Summit/Short Hills/SOMA Publisher August 18, 2021

I just learned this summer what a “clingstone” fruit is and it explains a lot about my frustration with them!

Unlike a fruit like an avocado which has a pit that easily cuts away from its flesh, a clingstone fruit “CLINGS” to its pit — making it really annoying to cut which is why most people just eat them whole.

Now I’m not against eating the fruits whole but it irks me when my kids throw half of a whole peach in the garbage because they don’t want to get anywhere near the pit.

SO I figured out this way to cut them and hopefully it helps you too! I used a peach here but this also works for plums, nectarines, and anything else with a stubborn pit! Happy Farmers Market season! πŸ‘©πŸΌ‍πŸŒΎπŸ§ΊπŸ‘

1. Make an X across the top that goes all the way around.

2. Turn the fruit and make another cut across the middle that goes all the way around.

3. Hold the fruit by the top and bottom and TWIST!
