The Montclair Cooperative School was founded in 1963 and has been a leader in progressive education for over 60 years. The Co-op exists to engage parents in their children’s education to keep children at the center of school life and impel our students toward their excellence. From Early Ages (2.5 years) through eighth grade, the school’s mission is to educate the whole child, meeting each child where they are and making sure each child feels seen and heard.

Our goal is to develop academic abilities and encourage the emerging social responsibilities of each child. Each class is a community of learners where children are invited to take risks, question, explore, discuss, interpret, and create. Rather than lecture children, we use their personal experiences in and out of the classroom to teach healthy social behavior as an ongoing, fundamental aspect of Co-op life and beyond.

At the heart of the Co-op’s success is the sense of community. Teachers, parents, and administrators believe in the tenets of progressive education and work together to create a rich and rewarding educational environment. We all hold the belief that a child who is socially and emotionally in a good, balanced place lays a strong foundation for continued study, growth, and hopefully a lifelong love for learning.

Come experience the joy of being part of the Co-op community.
