A few months ago we finally went to Lakota Wolf Preserve - something that's been on our bucket list for a long time! Here's what you need to know about taking a day trip.
- It's in Columbia, NJ, about an hour drive from Summit.
- You MUST have a tour reservation to go - you can't just show up. Tours ($15/adult, $7/child) are limited to 25 people at a time and they fill up pretty far in advance.
- The tours take place entirely outdoors - dress for the weather! This is a huge bonus because #COVID but also because the kids can walk around while the talk is going on without causing much of a disturbance.

- They have a bus you can take up to the wolves and also back down to the parking area - walking is also optional. I wouldn't bring a stroller unless it's a hiking stroller. We took the bus UP to the wolves and none of the 9 kids in our party had a problem walking back DOWN to the parking area.
- They have a few different packs of wolves who are all close enough to see (they are well cared for, don't worry!) and they will also get them to howl for you, which is hauntingly magical.
- The owners are extremely knowledgeable and the tour was indeed educational, as it claims to be!

- Winter is a great time to go because wolves love the cold so they're usually more active.
- In addition to the wolf packs, there are also foxes, a lynx, and a bobcat! After the wolf tour, you walk down to the foxes, lynx, and bobcat and get to learn even more.
- This tour was loved by all the children AND adults - it's educational and you get to be up close with the animals! Highly recommend!
- The tour would be a great addition to a weekend spent in the Delaware Water Gap. There are campgrounds and bed and breakfasts, and tons of outdoor activities (tubing or canoeing down the Delaware in the summer!) including Mount Tammany, one of the most famous hikes in NJ. About 30 minutes away are Bushkill Falls, the Crayola Experience, and Camelback and Shawnee ski resorts!
