North Jersey Family Summer Bucket List 2019 *with printable*

Summer activities for kids in the Summit / Short Hills / SOMA area

By Julie Lepore, Macaroni Kid Summit/SH/SOMA Publisher May 29, 2019

School's almost out for summer and, while most of our days will be spent just hanging out at the pool, there are some things that I want to make sure we do this summer. We have so many cool activities available to us locally so I put together a list so I don't miss any! I even made it printable so you can check them off as you go.

This list I'm sharing is the actual list I made for my own family and if you have anything you think I should add, please drop me a line at juliel@macaronikid.com. I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Summer Family Bucket List 2019

Print it out and keep it on your fridge!

Visit the Turtle Back Zoo - We're zoo regulars so this one goes without saying.

Go to your town's Farmers Market - Confession: we never go to the Summit Farmers Market because I like to relax on Sundays but I think I might try to hit up a few in other towns this summer!

Hike the Fairy Trail - See my tips for hiking the Fairy Trail here!

Visit a new playground - Check out my Top 5 Playgrounds list and let me know if you go to one you don't see on there!

Unplug for a whole day - This one is going to be a real challenge for me but I'm going to do it!

Visit the Watchung Stables - You can walk around and the horses will come right up to you for petting! It's free to just walk around and see the horses!

Visit Fosterfields Living Historical Farm - Check our calendar for their upcoming special events!

Ride NJ Transit to another town for a day - We once rode the train from Summit to Maplewood, played in Memorial Park, went to downtown Maplewood for dinner, then rode back to Summit for dessert at McCool's. So fun!

Join your library's Summer Reading Program - Prevent the "summer slide" and make sure you're all reading all summer!

Take a day trip to the Jersey Shore - It's not a Jersey summer without a trip to the Boardwalk in my opinion!

Have a cone at Zita's - What's your favorite flavor?

Visit Raptor Trust and hike the Great Swamp - Raptor Trust is a must-see for my little bird lovers (and me!!)! It can be a short visit so we'll bring a picnic and go on a hike after visiting with the birds.

Take a sports class with Proventus - And tell them you found the class through Macaroni Kid for a discount! My kids' favorite sports class!

Climb at Gravity Vault - We went last summer and loved it but I've been dying to get the kids there too.

Dine al fresco in your town - We'll be doing this shortly while Summit Street Sounds is happening.

See an outdoor movie - Check the calendar for upcoming outdoor movies!

Tell a friend about MacKid - Did you learn about an awesome event through the newsletter? Help a sister out and tell a friend!

See fireworks - Because #summer.

Get a museum pass from your library - Your library card can get you access to museums! Did you know this?! Go ask a librarian what museum you can get into for free and take advantage of this little-known library card perk.

Take an art class with Little Rembrandts - My kids took a free art class with Little Rembrandts and I was shocked at how quiet they were. They really enjoyed it!

Take a cooking class at Classic Thyme - Might be leaving the kids home for this one.

Go to a "Kids Eat Free" restaurant - Find one here.

Go to Maplewoodstock- Classic SOMA in the summer, amirite?

Pick your own strawberries - And then make some jam with them!

Go bowling at East Hanover Lanes - Great for a rainy day!

Have a Magic Blend - Because it's not summer in Summit without some Magic Fountain.

Go to a Family Fun Night at Applegate Farms - A DJ, magic show, outdoor movie, and ice cream! And there are SIX! You can definitely make it to at least one!

Ride the swan paddle boats at the West Orange Reservoir - Make a day of it and stay for a picnic and some fun on the Regatta Playground too!

Visit Trailside Nature and Science Center - Take a class, a guided hike, or sign the kids up for a drop-off program and take an hour to yourself!

Try the best pizzas in the area and have a vote for your family's favorite - My personal favorite: Rezza, hands down. Reservoir in South Orange and Arturo's in Maplewood are close in a tie for second place!
