I have something very unique for you this week, tickets to a wildly entertaining and exhilarating Off-Broadway show called Fuerza Bruta at the Daryl Roth Theatre near Union Square in Manhattan.
I recently saw the show with my family. When we first walked into the mysteriously dark theater, my 7 year-old child was excited, but my ‘almost 10’ year-old was skeptical and wondered why we dragged him downtown and away from his favorite computer game to see another “ordinary” show. However, by the end of the show both kids were delighted, and my super cynic "pre-tween" was especially bouncing with enthusiasm and declaring that he had “never seen a show quite like Fuerza Bruta” before.
I would call Fuerza Bruta more of an ‘experience’ than a typical ‘show’. One overall distinct feature is that the audience never sits down. Each person stands in the crowd and moves as one entity during the entire show as the performers dance and move above and around you. The show is certainly not for the faint of heart or claustrophobic. However if you are willing to give into the vibe and let yourself go, your senses will delight in all the stimulation surrounding you.
The show begins with a live drumming performance on stage, and then another stage appears from the other side of the theater. On this second stage, an actor on a wire runs against a ‘brut force’ wind, and then he - along with the show - completely takes off!
The most exhilarating part for me was when the roof of the performance space became a translucent cover filled with water. I marveled as dancers/performers swam and moved above me against the clear surface. My children were thrilled with how this roof moved up and down and my son particularly liked the way the aqua theme was further enhanced when water was sprayed onto audience members. Yes, you can get wet during this show (and my son went seeking the water and loved it), but if you want to avoid the deluge you can stand towards one of the 4 walls and stay dry (like I did!).
There is no real story narrative in Fuerza Bruta, but the series of images and tents created around and above the audience certainly makes a statement and sends its own message (one that is open to interpretation, making for good family conversation afterwards!) I would caution you from bringing very young children, but the show will most definitely "WOW" your older children and TWEENS and they will be very happy that you brought them downtown!
