SCOOBY-DOO LEGOS! Create Your Own Mystery

with these Fun & Quirky Sets!

By Elizabeth Moglia Jackson September 11, 2015
When the LEGO Group and Warner Bros. Consumer Products offered to send my family Scooby-Doo LEGO sets for a sponsored product review I jumped on the opportunity. After all, my kids love LEGOS, and I grew up watching Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, Velma and the gang on old fashioned, network Saturday Morning (non HD) television (yes, I’m old :-)). Then I had a moment of doubt wondering how my children would react to this symbol of my generation (after all, they know of Scooby-Doo from some books and toys, but Scooby-Doo is not “as yet” dominant in their field of a billion television characters). Well my misgivings were quickly put aside as my kids tore open the Scooby-Doo LEGO sets and got right to work building their own mysterious and quirky LEGO universe.

Parents will appreciate how the sets range for different age groups.  We were fortunate enough to be able to try a few sets and the kids decided (on their own) to start with the smallest set for 5 - 12 year olds, “Mummy Museum Mystery”. The kids were immediately drawn to the characters and the settings; they wanted to “create their own, personal “Mummy Museum Mystery” and were very amused by the hamburger trap that reveals the person behind the mummy headdress.  In this way they learned the confidence and the skills to attempt the bigger sets, moving on to building their own “Mystery Machine”, and going creatively wild with the “Mystery Plane" and its "flying Shaggy"!

There were occasional stumbles early on for my 6 year-old daughter and 8 year-old son in assembling the pieces, but even then it became an incredible learning tool, since it quickly taught them the value of patience and following the pictorial directions meticulously. By the end, they even ended up building the most challenging set - “Haunted Lighthouse” all on their own (on a Saturday morning while I caught up on some much needed sleep - thank you LEGO!).  Now they are creating their own great mysteries in the Scooby-Doo world they built in our basement!

You can check out the sets and play with them before purchasing at a local LEGO store (each set includes some individual Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred figurines as well as monsters and headless horseman).  In fact if you live near the Bridgewater Commons there is a free special event next Saturday, September 19 from 11:00AM - 3:00PM called LEGO Scooby-Doo Mystery Tour where you can see life-sized models of the gang, create your own trick-or-treat bag, and go home with an exclusive model of the Mystery Machine!  Please click here for more details.

I’m off to watch Scooby Doo on Netflix and You Tube now - it’s our new family favorite cartoon!
