It was a pleasure to sit down with local entrepreneur, award-winning radio and television host, inventor, and bestselling author Barry Farber. Throughout his career, Barry has written more than a dozen books on business, sales, communication, and personal success, with more than one million copies sold in 25 languages. His newest passion project, however, is something very different—a children’s book titled The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree, a heartwarming story filled with adventure, compassion, and timeless life lessons for young readers.
Barry, did you always wanted to be a writer?
Not at all. I actually struggled with grammar when I was younger. What I loved wasn't necessarily writing itself—it was communicating ideas. Throughout my career, I wrote articles and columns because I enjoyed sharing real-life experiences and lessons that could help others. Writing became the vehicle for making a positive difference in people’s lives.
Why did you decide to write a children's book after writing so many successful books for adults?
After spending decades writing business and motivational books, I realized that many of life’s most important lessons are best learned early. I wanted to introduce children to the same principles that successful people use throughout their lives.
Through Little Billy’s adventure, children discover what I call The Five Secrets—Service, Attitude, Courage, Empathy, and Determination. Rather than preaching, I wanted to tell an entertaining story where young readers naturally experience these values through the characters, their challenges, and the friendships they build along the way.
How did the idea for Little Billy and his adventure begin?
The idea for Little Billy began years ago while I was making up bedtime stories for my daughter. Night after night, the character continued to grow. Over time, those bedtime adventures evolved into a complete journey filled with unforgettable animal friends, exciting adventures, humor, and meaningful life lessons.
What started as stories for one little girl eventually became The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree, a book I hope will inspire children and families everywhere.
What is The Adventures of Little Billy about?
Little Billy sets out on an adventure to find the legendary Magic Tree. Along the way, he meets a variety of animals, each facing a different challenge. As Billy helps them overcome their obstacles, he discovers that the true magic isn’t found in a tree at all—it’s found within the Five Secrets: Service, Attitude, Courage, Empathy, and Determination. Those qualities become the real treasure of the journey.
Why did you choose animals to teach these lessons?
Animals naturally connect with children. Each animal represents one of the Five Secrets and brings a unique personality to the story. By using animal characters, the lessons become part of the adventure rather than feeling like a lecture. Children laugh, imagine, and learn at the same time.
The story’s message also extends beyond the pages of the book. Little Billy proudly serves as an ambassador for the Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve, helping encourage compassion for rescued farm animals and supporting educational efforts that teach children about kindness and empathy.
How is important for you that book character Little Billy became an ambassador?
It’s incredibly meaningful. Helping animals is a central theme of the story, and I wanted that message to have a real-world impact. A portion of proceeds from the book supports animal rescue and sanctuary efforts. I wanted Little Billy's mission of helping animals to extend beyond fiction and make a real-world difference.
Did you face challenges getting this book published?
Absolutely. Like many authors, I received plenty of rejection letters over the years. But I’ve always believed that setbacks are simply opportunities to learn. Every rejection made the book stronger and taught me something valuable.
That’s one of the reasons Determination became one of Little Billy’s Five Secrets. It’s not just something I wrote about—it’s something I’ve lived.
Even though you faced challenges publishing book, it seems to be growing beyond the pages. Can you tell me about that?
That’s one of the most exciting parts. Little Billy has evolved into much more than a book. The story has already been adapted into an animated series featuring celebrity voices and professional athletes, and it has inspired a live theatrical production performed by students at Livingston High School.
My vision has always been to meet children wherever they are—through books, animation, theater, schools, television, and eventually many other forms of storytelling—all while keeping the Five Secrets at the heart of every adventure.

Will we see more Little Billy adventures in the future?
Without question. Little Billy’s journey is only beginning. We’re exploring new books, additional animated adventures, educational programs, television opportunities, and other creative projects. My hope is to build a world where children everywhere can laugh, dream, and grow while learning values that will serve them throughout their lives.
If even one child grows up choosing kindness over anger, courage over fear, service over selfishness, or determination over giving up, then Little Billy has accomplished his mission.
Final question: Do you have any advice for children who dream of becoming writers?
Keep writing! Write down your ideas, stories, and experiences every day. The more you practice, the more confident you'll become. One of my favorite sayings is, “The work will teach you how to do it.” Every great writer begins with a single idea and a blank page.
As parent, I always look for stories that do more than entertain—I want books that spark conversations, inspire kindness, and encourage my kids to grow into compassionate, confident individuals. The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree does exactly that, weaving important life lessons into a fun adventure that families can enjoy together.
