I love movies, and have seen a lifetime of them in every genre you can imagine, and also tried every new gimmick imaginable (from 3D and IMAX, to dinner served at your seat and movie chairs that are so comfortable that they practically recline into beds!)  Yet I have to say unequivocally that the new Ghostbusters: Dimension at Madame Tussauds in Times Square is unlike anything I’ve seen or experienced before.  Ghostbusters: Dimension  is NOT virtual reality, it’s HYPER-REALITY, it’s the future of movies and entertainment - and it’s right here in the New York City area right now.

The entire Ghostbusters Experience begins at Madame Tussauds as one of their special exhibits.  You can walk into scenes of the new Ghostbusters movie (which I recommend seeing prior, though it's not a requirement). You walk through an eerie room in the Aldridge Mansion where the wall pictures stare and blink back at you, and then down to the "subway" where ghosts appear in the train windows.   My kids enjoyed taking pictures with the stars of the movie, including fantastic wax replicas of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones.  This fun little tour culminates in the line for Ghostbusters: Dimension the Hyper-Reality experience.

As we waited I must admit I was getting a bit nervous about what to expect, after all I had only tried a Google Cardboard virtual reality with my husband’s iPhone before (while in the comfort and safety of my own home).  It did not help my nerves that they had literally just changed the recommended age for Ghostbusters: Dimension to at least 13 and yet there we were with our 10 year old and 7.5 year old!  As to not disappoint our very eager 10 year-old, we learned that parents of younger kids can sign waivers as long as your kids are over the minimum height requirement of 48”.   My 7 year-old daughter and I were still a bit hesitant.  However the staff at the entrance was utterly delightful, patient and reassuring.  We were convinced to do this as a family because as the staff explained it is a communal experience; you walk around and defeat the ghosts - TOGETHER (plus we reminded my daughter of all the female heroes in the Ghostbuster movie and so she was delighted to be made the next heroine alongside mommy and daddy)!

We were led to a small room where we were each fitted with virtual reality headsets (and internal microphones), large backpacks, and our own ghost fighting blasters (just like the movie).  Once the equipment was on we could see and hear each other although we appeared to each other through our headsets as different avatars that looked nothing like us (and were all white males, by the way, though we’ll cut them some slack since the technology is just starting!) Our kids, though, had appropriately smaller-sized avatars that matched their heights and made it easier for us to distinguish each other.

Once the equipment was on all the fun really began as we entered another ‘dimension': First we were led into an elevator and as we traveled up what seemed like many floors, we were attacked by out first ghost!  Together we took down the little fiend, and before we could recover we found ourselves outside on the very ledge of a tall skyscraper!  This was my favorite part.  I really felt like I was on the rickety old fire escape that was about to fall as a gigantic marshmallow man attacked us all, with a giant and very real New York skyline in the background!!  In fact we were enjoying this outside illusion so much that we were gently nudged by unseen "ghost hands" (or Madame Tussard’s workers - it was hard to tell!) into the next room where we also met some devilish, but incredibly fun paranormal challenges!  I don’t want to give away all the surprises, but I really did feel that I went to another universe!

The experience does go by pretty quickly and if you are nervous about taking kids under 13 there are some things to consider.   In reality there is NO elevator, you really are just walking through a few rooms on the same floor and my 7 year old took her mask off a few times to reassure herself.  The staff is right there all the time and you can raise your hand if you are having troubles or are dizzy.   As I said before, if you see the movie first you’ll recognize the ghosts and know that it’s all in good fun.   On the other hand,  my daughter has an older brother and she does see a lot of movies that are recommended for older kids (when sometimes she just wants to watch the next G-Rated Air Bud at home).   If your child is under 7 and is not used to watching PG and especially PG 13 movies I would wait a few years for Ghostbusters Dimension.

Otherwise if you and your  kids are over 48” and want to be WOWED The Void has created an adventure that is worth every penny!  Ghostbusters Dimension and the entire Ghostbusters Experience will not only make you feel like you walked into the Ghostbusters movie, but that you literally have experienced the future of entertainment!

And now thanks to our friends at Madame Tussauds we have a very special giveaway!  One lucky Summit Short Hills SOMA subscriber will win 4 passes to the entire Madame Tussauds Ghostbusters Experience including The Void, Ghostbusters Dimension, the wax museum and even the Marvel 4D Experience (movie) at Madame Tussauds.  It’s a prize package worth over $200 and I’m going to leave this on the website until Labor Day to give you a chance to tell friends and family to enter (you must be a Macaroni Kid Summit Short Hills SOMA subscriber to win)!
