You may have heard of Bedtimemath.org, as many teachers recommend joining the free website and downloading the free app. The Summit-based company Bedtime Math brilliantly makes math enjoyable, less intimidating, and a regular part of your kid's routine, by providing a free daily short story/article (which you can read to your kids at bedtime), followed by a math problem to solve based upon something in the story. Bedtime Math is the brainchild of a local mom, Short Hill’s own Laura Overdeck, and now Laura is doing even more to give back to the community with her new initiative The Great Crayon Cleanout!
Bedtime Math has teamed up with The Crayon Initiative (another awesome non-profit organization), to call on all New Jersey Schools from June 6 - June 10th to recycle their crayons! As Laura Overdeck explains, “Every pound of broken pieces of crayon saved from the landfill can make 40 fresh new crayons, instead of becoming non-biodegradable sludge.” The discarded crayons collected from across the state during the Cleanout will be melted down to manufacture new packs, which will be donated to New Jersey children’s hospitals.
With The Great Crayon Cleanout kids won’t just learn about being environmentalists and helping other children, they will also learn math - as Bedtime Math’s curriculum is weaved into the whole process! Schools that would like to participate will receive a kit that includes crayon collection and math activities to be completed during the week of June 6 - June 10th, and a copy of the book Bedtime Math: The Truth Comes Out for their school library. All pre-paid shipping supplies are donated by Bedtime Math. Schools must sign up online by May 13 at www.bedtimemath.org/crayons. So tell your school to sign up today!!
