A Highlight of a Local Children’s Librarian

Laura Weinbrom of The Library of the Chathams, Chatham

If you want to inspire children to have a love of reading, the library is a great place to start. All of our local libraries offer great programing throughout the school year. One program is the summer reading program to encourage kids to continue reading during the long break from school. Amy Rowland and I are interviewing some of our local reading crusaders. We encourage you to read about these wonderful librarians and then stop in and introduce yourself, they are there for you.

We are starting with one of ...

Cool New Products from Uncle Milton - Daytime Fun

My 6 year-old Gives Two Thumbs Up and A Huge Smile!

I was so excited when Macaroni Kid contacted me about the opportunity to review some cool new toys.  I have a 6 year-old who is high energy and all fun, so this may just be up his alley.

Two days ago a big box came in the mail from Uncle Milton's National Geographic Outdoor Explorer and my son ripped open the entire package. So far we have checked out three products for daytime fun.

What Elite Athletes Can Teach Our Kids

Keeping Your Eye on the Goal
Whether it's being an Olympic athlete or winning the school spelling bee, achieving a goal requires a tremendous amount of commitment. Michael Phelps does two four-hour practices every day. The 27-year-old has been training for well over half his life. As a teenager, certainly there were times he would rather have slept in late or hung out with his friends. But he had been dreaming of being a swimming champion since watching the 1996 Summer Olympics and was willing to make the necessary ...

Olympics Superstars

How is playing the bagpipes like throwing a javelin blindfolded? You don't have to be very good to get people's attention!

All jokes aside, the following athletes are a few who are sure to get (and keep) everyone's attention:

Track and Field:
Usain Bolt (Jamaica) won the gold in 100m, 200m, and 4x100m in the 2008 Olympics and holds world records in all three events as well. Teammate Yohan Blake, however, beat him in the Jamaican trials and will keep the pressure on. Tyson Gay (USA), the ...

Olympics Trivia

The First
The first recorded Olympic Games took place in Ancient Greece in 776 BC. The only event was a "stade," a foot race about 600 feet in length. This is where the word "stadium" originates. The athletes participated nude or "gymnos." This is where the word "gymnasium" originates.

The Countries
205 different nations will be competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Greece is the only nation to have participated under its own flag in every modern Summer Olympic Games.

London Calling
2012 will be London's third time hosting ...

Materials:
Acrylic Paints (gold, silver, and bronze)
Paint brush(s)
ribbon

Directions:
Shape Salt Dough into a circle about one cm thick. I used a mason jar lid to help shape it, but cookie cutters ...

Olympics: Torch Snack & Activity

Macaroni Made

Ingredients:
ice cream cones
cheese popcorn

Directions:
Pile on the popcorn and enjoy!

As I was making this fun snack with my kids, I realized it could also be a really fun game...why not try a torch relay? Scoop some popcorn into your torch (ice cream cone) race a short distance while trying to not drop any popcorn, dump the popcorn into a bucket, then go back to the start for more.  The first person or team to fill their bucket with popcorn wins!

Get creative and have your ...

The season for all of the parks runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Keep in mind, NJ State parks have many rules so make sure you familiarize yourself with them before you go.   Also, the park and swimming area ...

National and Local Summer Reading Programs

Prizes and More...

My memories of summer always include the pool and the library.  As a child I was NOT an avid reader, actually it was a struggle to get me to read anything. In the summer, that always changed and I remember being in the library and being mesmerized by the reading prizes along the wall.  I now enjoy reading without incentives, but these programs were so fun and now my son really enjoys them too.

Below I highlight some national and local reading programs.  At the public libraries the theme for ...
